Kicking off on Friday, October 30, the 13th EMIFF will begin with an opening gala at Palma's Teatre Principal. Legendary Hollywood actress Annette Bening will be honored with the prestigious Evolution Icon Award, while Academy Award-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle will receive the Cinematography Icon Award. Additionally, German actress Emilia Schüle will be presented with the Evolution New Talent Award. The festival will culminate with the awards ceremony during the closing gala on Thursday, November 5, at the Palma Congress Center.
The festival will feature over 140 screenings, including 5 world premieres, 9 national premieres, and 5 screenings in the Balearic Islands.
A standout event in the programme is the world premiere of "Amanece en Samaná," the latest film by Mallorcan director Rafa Cortés. Cortés will present the film in his home country, accompanied by the film’s stars Luis Tosar, Luisa Mayol, Luis Zahera, and Bárbara Santa-Cruz. Among the national premieres, notable documentaries include "Porcelain War," an impressive tribute to the resilience of the human spirit set against the backdrop of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at Sundance; "2073," directed by Asif Kapadia, who will attend the screening, depicting a dystopian future where the worst fears of modern life have come true; and "The Geeks," by Michael Schwart and Tyler Nilson, a coming-of-age story marking its national premiere.
EMIFF also proudly presents the Made in Balearic Islands section, featuring a selection of 36 films, including feature films and shorts, highlighting the festival's commitment to the local industry and professionals. This year's documentary section includes the world premieres of "Mallorca 1983: Signs in the Sand" by Juan A. Forés and Cesc Mulet, "Brushes and Drumsticks" by Rubén Capilla Vidal and Angie Vallorí Salas, and "Protagonists" by Luis Calero.
Tickets for film screenings, as well as passes for the opening and closing galas, are available for purchase through the festival's official website at www.evolutionfilmfestival.com.
