05-11-2024

The Palma Conference Centre hosted the 30th anniversary celebration of Sonrisa Médica, the first hospital clown organisation in Spain. Approximately 900 people attended the event to reflect on the impact of this initiative on children's hospitals across the country.

Miquel Borràs, founder and honorary president of Sonrisa Médica, began the gala with a speech. He called for a minute of silence in honor of the victims of the DANA in Valencia and recounted the beginnings of the organization. "Thirty years ago it would have been very difficult for me to believe that this activity would be extended to almost all children's hospitals in Spain," said Borràs. "The presence of a clown in the hospital represents a breath of fresh air," he added.

The president of the Government, Marga Prohens, and the mayor of Palma, Jaime Martínez, also attended the gala. During her speech, Prohens was approached by a clown who placed a hat on her, prompting laughter and applause from the audience.

The gala featured performances by the clowns of Sonrisa Médica, illustrating the history of the organization through humour. Musical performances included contributions from the polyphonic group Cap Pela, the Cor de l'Hospital Universitari Son Espases, the string quartet Ad Libitum, and singer-songwriter Jaume Anglada, who performed the "Ode to Joy".

The clowns concluded with a musical performance using hospital materials as instruments.

After thirty years, Sonrisa Médica continues to demonstrate the positive effects of their work, bringing joy to hospitalized children and their families.
