The Palma Convention Center, inaugurated in 2017, has swiftly become an emblem of the city's seafront, seamlessly integrating with the ancient city walls.
Designed by the renowned Navarrese architect Francisco Mangado, this building boasts a beehive-like structure, accommodating two state-of-the-art auditoriums with capacities of 1,966 and 471 seats respectively. The exhibition area, crafted to resemble a cave open to the sea, invites natural light through expansive windows. Additionally, the complex includes several meeting rooms and a 600 m² terrace offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Palma, enhancing its versatility.
Mangado's innovative use of shapes and materials has resulted in a design-efficient masterpiece spanning over 56,000 m², complemented by the adjacent Meliá Palma Bay hotel, which features 268 rooms. The floors of the entire complex are adorned with anthracite granite, while the façade is clad in sandstone, and the interiors are enriched with the warm tones of tropical Gabonese wood. Externally, the state-of-the-art aluminium material known as "allusion" not only adds aesthetic appeal but also provides thermal and acoustic insulation.
According to Mangado, "We have employed materials with a timeless quality, but more importantly, materials that are extraordinarily fresh and fantastic." Light plays a pivotal role in this exceptional composition. "Someone once said it is the cheapest and one of the most important materials in architecture," Mangado notes, adding, "In the Mediterranean context, the light is fantastic, and one must know how to utilize it effectively."
This architectural marvel by Mangado was honored with the 2017 Spanish Architecture Award, bestowed by the Higher Council of Architects' Colleges of Spain (CSCAE). This accolade recognizes projects that epitomize architectural uniqueness, innovation, and construction excellence.
